Jeevitha Anathashrama: an orphanage in Bangalore, India

Some of the children at Jeevitha Anathashrama.
Jeevitha Anathashrama is situated in a rural area about 45 minutes from Bangalore, India. Jeevitha is home to 35 orphans ages 4-16 years.
The Jeevitha staff's mission is to provide these children with food, shelter and education and to raise them to be good citizens of the country. Jeevitha is not a well known orphanage and as such they don’t get a lot of attention or funding.
They survive by going door-to-door asking for donations daily and on the generosity of their neighbors and the nuns from the nearby church/school. All 35 children live in a building that is less than 1,000 square feet in size.
A Cultural Care Au Pair staff member in India suggested we partner with this organization, and when Boston staff paid a visit to meet the children, we agreed whole-heartedly. The kids are amazing, sweet and very focused on their education. They are also very appreciative, and were thrilled with the small gift bags of candy we brought. The staff at Jeevitha (all volunteers who live there as well) do an impressive job keeping their habitat organized and clean and ensuring the kids are well nourished. They are also very strict about homework and very proud of the fact that two of their former residents are now attending a nearby college.

What they need most
Jeevitha Anathashrama is sorely in need of even the most basic necessities. Immediate needs include:
How Kids First is helping
Cultural Care Au Pair staff has visited Jeevitha twice since initiating our partnership. The first time our staff arrived, we met with the facility's staff to discuss their needs and meet the children. On our second visit, we took a group of the children shopping and bought over 5 full shopping carts of food, shoes, household supplies. Some of the items, like the plastic dishes and cups, etc, will last them for a year.
Our plan is to provide Jeevitha with additional supplies and enough funds to install a computer center and to hire an English teacher. |
